Practical information

The most populous American city, New York - also known as The Big Apple or The City That Never Sleeps - is located in the eastern United States, in New York State.

Known for its skyscrapers, yellow taxis, luxury stores, long avenues and billboards, New York derives its worldwide reputation from the many films and series. Embark now for a flight from Paris to New York with Corsair.

To travel to the United States, and therefore to New York, you will need to present a valid biometric or electronic passport for you and your children, regardless of their age. You must also have previously applied online for an ESTA, an electronic travel authorization, which must be accepted to open the door to the United States.

Thanks to the Visa Waiver Program, it is not necessary to apply for a visa unless your stay exceeds 3 months.

Before you leave

For a trip to New York, don't forget to bring:

  • Your passport
  • Your health record. Although no vaccination is mandatory, it is always better to bring it with you.
  • Your round-trip airline tickets
  • Your ESTA accepted
  • Your travel insurance certificates, luggage, liability, etc....
  • Confirmations of your accommodation bookings (for customs declaration)
  • An international permit, if you want to rent a car.

Good to know

As a general rule, it is not recommended to lock your suitcase because the frequency of customs controls is important. However, if you want to secure your suitcase, opt for a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) lock that can be unlocked by customs officials using a specific key.

Business hours

The vast majority of fashion stores are open from 10am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays for the most tourist areas. This time period is often longer in shopping centres. The small neighbourhood mini-markets are open 24 hours a day.

Public transport is perfectly networked in New York and operates 24 hours a day.

  • Metro: 24 lines provide safe, fast and affordable access to the entire city and suburbs.
  • Bus: the network of 274 bus lines serves the avenues from north to south and the streets from east to west.
  • The Staten Island ferry: completely free of charge, it connects Staten Island to Manhattan while offering a magnificent view of the city.

Cycling is not very common and yet, 500km of bike paths are available and particularly pleasant in Central Park and Brooklyn.

You can of course opt for a Yellow Cab, the famous New York yellow taxi, and don't forget to add a tip by paying the bill. Car rental is possible but very unlikely to be recommended in the city centre as parking spaces are very scarce.

Safety and security

New York is a relatively safe city, however, be careful to avoid the remote alleys of the Bronx in the middle of the night.

Like any metropolis, tourists are the targets of pickpockets, so always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in the middle of a crowd.

Find all the information and events in New York free of charge on the official guide's website or in one of the many tourist offices throughout the city. The US Tourist Office website is also filled with valuable information about the city and state of New York.

The must-attend party if you visit New York in January or February: the Chinese New Year. This event attracts a large number of people during its parade.

In New York, as in the rest of the United States, you can celebrate Martin Luther King's Day on the third Monday in January and Christopher Columbus' Day on the second Monday in October. It also celebrates New Year's Day, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The essentials

After a morning stroll in Central Park, go down 5th Avenue to discover St. Patrick's Cathedral in front of Rockefeller Center. Turn into Times Square and its stunning billboards and then take the time to climb up to admire the view from the Empire State Building.

For a more typical day, start with a breakfast in Greenwich Village, the artists' district, then immerse yourself in the trendy atmosphere of SoHo. End the day with the September 11 Memorial and Wall Street after lunch in Chinatown.

Finally, take the ferry to admire the Statue of Liberty before visiting the Ellis Island Museum. On your return ashore, cross the Brooklyn Bridge and take time for a peaceful stroll through the neighbourhood.

As the gastronomic capital of the United States, New York offers all the cuisines of the world.

Street Food

Carts and food trucks allow you to eat on the go, like a local. Hot dogs, bagels, organic vegetables, seafood, cupcakes, barbecue... All the specialities are available at any time of the day and sometimes even at night.

Fast food et restaurant

Once again, there is no shortage of choices: brunch, burger, vegan, local, gourmet cuisine... Listen to your desires, all you have to do is choose.

Don't forget to add the "tip" to the note! This 15% to 20% of the bill amount, not included, is the only salary of the servers and, therefore, essential.

New York is a city that has a lot to offer. Sports enthusiasts will be delighted by its hundreds of kilometres of cycle paths, large parks and guided running tours, another way to visit the city.

Dozens of museums and hundreds of art galleries will satisfy the culture-loving and art lovers. For theatres and musicals, it is on Broadway, New York's oldest avenue, that everything happens: shows of all kinds every evening of the week.

Finally, the thousands of fashion stores are increasingly appealing to shopping enthusiasts. From the 10 floors of Macy's to the must-see brands on 5th Avenue and the Brooklyn flea market, once again all styles pass through. Whatever the product you are looking for, from the trendiest jacket to the handmade vintage necklace, you will find it in New York!

New York offers a humid continental climate that involves a sometimes very cold winter and a hot and humid summer.

The best times to enjoy the city are spring and late summer. Indeed, from April to June, temperatures oscillate between 17 and 24°C, perfect conditions for long walks.

The famous Indian summer offers a very beautiful late season with an average temperature of 25°C in August and September. July is also a very hot month but it presents a slightly higher risk of rain and storms.

Of course, it is not forbidden to visit New York outside these periods. In winter, it is the dream of many travellers to be able to admire the city under the snow.
